For others, it\u2019s about finding\nthe best deals on discounted candy after Valentine\u2019s Day. For your dentist,\nhowever, February is also Gum Disease Awareness Month. Because gum disease will\naffect more than half of Americans at some point in their lives, it\u2019s important\nyou maintain excellent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.springhousedentist.com\/preventive-dentistry.html\">gum health<\/a>\nto keep this disease at bay. Here are a few foods you can eat to keep your gums\nin great condition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leafy Greens <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Spinach and kale are particularly good choices. They contain\ncalcium and vitamin C, both of which can help reduce inflammation and fight gum\ndisease. As an added bonus, calcium helps strengthen your tooth enamel, making\nyou more resistant to cavities. Eat these greens in a salad, add them to your\nsandwiches, or even try blending them into smoothies or soups. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shiitake Mushrooms <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Shiitake mushrooms have been referred to as a \u201csuperfood\u201d\nbecause they are rich in a compound called lentinan. Lentinan prevents\nbacterial growth in your mouth and even battles the buildup of plaque. These mushrooms\nare typically found in Asian cuisine and can be eaten cooked or raw. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Citrus Fruits and Berries <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These foods have high amounts of vitamin C and calcium. Just\nbe sure not to overdo it. Although the sugars in these foods are natural, it\u2019s still\nsugar, and still has the potential to cause cavities. Be sure to brush your\nteeth after consuming these fruits, but wait at least 30 minutes. The acid from\ncitrus temporarily softens your enamel, and the pressure of brushing\nimmediately afterwards can do more harm than good. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fibrous Vegetables <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Chewing the skin of fibrous vegetables will naturally scrub\nyour teeth clean as you eat them. Additionally, it stimulates saliva\nproduction, which helps wash away any leftover food particles and bacteria in\nyour mouth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Water <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Water is easily the best beverage choice for your gum health,\nespecially if it\u2019s fortified with fluoride, as most tap water is. Fluoridated water\nhelps strengthen your teeth and makes them more resistant to acid attacks from\nharmful bacteria. Drinking plenty of water also keeps your gums hydrated and rinses\nyour mouth out of bacteria, acid, and bits of food. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lean Proteins <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Items like poultry, fish, eggs, and milk are all rich in phosphorus,\nwhich helps to strengthen your teeth and provide an extra boost of protection\nin the fight against cavities and gum disease. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dairy Products <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Cheese and yogurt in particular contain lots of calcium. They\nalso have a protein called casein that helps neutralize acids created by the\nbacteria in your mouth. Just be sure to check the label for low-sugar or\nsugar-free options. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just because February is Gum Disease Awareness Month doesn\u2019t\nmean you should only consume these foods in February.
