Though traditional braces are still an excellent way to correct issues with your smile, Invisalign is the method of choice for many people. Since it’s clear, this makes it much more discreet than bulky wires and brackets. It’s also removable, which makes it much easier to clean your teeth and prevent oral health issues. If you’re thinking about getting clear aligners to straighten your smile, read on for five tips on how to prepare for Invisalign treatment.

Tip #1: Prepare to Make Payments

Make sure you’re ready to pay for Invisalign treatment before you move forward with the procedure. Though treatment costs vary from person to person, you should expect to spend at least a few thousand dollars. If you have dental insurance, it should cover a portion of the cost. Many dentists also offer financing or savings plans so you don’t have to pay for the entire treatment at once.

Tip #2: Brush After Every Meal

While brushing twice and flossing once per day is key to maintaining good oral hygiene, you will need to do this even more often with Invisalign. Brushing and flossing after every meal will ensure that you don’t transfer any food particles to your aligners, which will prevent staining and lessen your risk of cavities. Removing your trays every time you eat or drink anything other than water will also keep them from becoming warped or otherwise damaged.

Tip #3: Get a Dental Kit Ready

When life gets busy, it can be hard to find the time to go home and clean your teeth. Create a dental travel kit to carry with you so you can freshen up your smile wherever you go. It should contain a toothbrush, dental floss, toothpaste, and mouthwash.

Tip #4: Have Your Supplies Ready

Along with your dental kit, you may also want to purchase an aligner removal tool. This will be particularly useful if you need to remove your aligners but aren’t able to clean your hands first. They can also be helpful for patients who find their Invisalign difficult to remove. You’ll also want to make sure to have pain medicine for the first few hours of discomfort after you begin to wear new trays.

Tip #5: Cut Back on Snacks

To be as effective as possible, Invisalign has to be worn for at least 20-22 hours each day. This means that popping them out any time you want to grab a snack will likely slow your treatment progression. To prepare for this, start cutting back on snacks. You may also want to schedule your meals to ensure that you don’t miss your daily wear time.

Though wearing clear aligners can take some getting used to, these five tips on how to prepare for Invisalign should help ease the transition. Soon, you’ll be sporting a gorgeous grin you’re proud of!
