Can I Still Get Dentures If I’ve Been Missing Teeth for a While?

When it comes to replacing missing teeth and rebuilding compromised smiles, few options are as tried-and-true as dentures. These lifelike, durable restorations can effectively replace missing teeth and restore lost oral functionality and beauty. However, if you’ve been without some or all of your teeth for quite some time, you might be wondering if dentures are still a viable solution for you. Here’s what your dentist wants you to know!

Why Missing Teeth Need to Be Replaced

One of the main issues that patients with missing teeth experience is what’s called bone resorption, which occurs when the body believes that it no longer needs bone matter in a particular area. In this case, the area is the jawbone—without your natural teeth providing stimulation to your jawbone, it can begin to prematurely deteriorate and shrink, greatly weakening it! This can lead to facial collapse as well as the likelihood of losing additional teeth. Unfortunately, these problems cannot be resolved without professional intervention.

How Do Dentures Work?

There are several types of dentures, with numerous uses to address various circumstances. Partial dentures are ideal for patients with just a few missing teeth, while full dentures are suited for those missing one or both arches of teeth. Traditionally, they consist of an acrylic base outfitted with lifelike prosthetic teeth. In some cases, dental implants can be used to retain them but otherwise, they rely on adhesives, suction, and muscle control to remain in position.

Can Dentures Prevent Bone Loss?

Ideally, a tooth-restoration solution shouldn’t just replace teeth, but also mitigate the undesirable problems that result from missing teeth. If dentures are worn correctly and as often as intended, patients should not experience further bone loss. In fact, they can actually prevent resorption to a certain extent since they provide some stimulation to your gums and jaw!

However, the challenge with dentures is that while they apply some pressure, it might not be enough. In these cases, they might need to be supported with dental implants, though this will depend on your oral health and individual circumstances. In any case, being proactive by maintaining the integrity and fit of your dentures will ensure that any future bone loss isn’t substantial.

The bottom line is that dentures are still a possibility if you’ve been without teeth for a while, and they can even protect your jaw from further resorption. That said, it’s still crucial that your restoration fits properly and is regularly inspected by your dentist—otherwise, issues will certainly begin to unfold!
