What to Do If An Invisalign Tray Doesn’t Quite Fit

One of the first things that anyone with an Invisalign aligner will tell you is that it’s almost impossible for anyone to tell that you’re wearing them. These trays are sleek, slender, and cling tightly to the teeth so that patients can feel confident in their appearance.

However, not every patient feels like their aligners fit perfectly to their teeth. If you’ve had that experience, there are a few reasons why that could be the case. Here’s what you should know.

How Is An Invisalign Aligner Supposed to Fit?

Before you can determine for sure that your Invisalign trays don’t fit properly, you should probably know exactly how they’re supposed to fit.

Invisalign aligners work by fitting tightly onto the teeth, pushing them into alignment over time. This means that it’s natural for the trays to be tight—even uncomfortably so—when you first put them on. However, the Invisalign trays also need to contain the teeth once they’ve moved, meaning that it’s common for there to be small gaps in the trays.

What Can Cause an Invisalign Aligner Not to Fit

If you feel like your Invisalign aligner is tighter than it ought to be, or even if you have trouble putting on your trays, that might not necessarily mean that they don’t fit properly. If you’ve just gotten those trays, it’s actually expected that they’ll be a little bit hard to wear for a few days. If you’re able to put your trays on at all, you should try to wear them for a little bit to see if the situation doesn’t improve.

If you can’t put on your aligners at all, or if you’ve noticed any visible damage to your trays, it may be the case that your aligner doesn’t actually fit. They might have cracked or warped, in which case you may need to replace them.

The Next Steps If Your Invisalign Aligner Doesn’t Fit

If you’re concerned that your Invisalign aligner doesn’t really fit properly, you should tell your dentist. They’ll be able to order you a replacement aligner if they think that’s necessary—however, it’s more likely that your dentist will move you up to the next set of trays.
